UFOP’s Metallurgical Engineering Program was founded in 1957. The undergraduate professionals are qualified to work in the areas of beneficiation of minerals and ores, in the extraction of metals, elaboration of metals/alloys, in its conformation, structural integrity, material selection, and in other correlated areas, as cement and ceramic industry, for example. The new alternatives of materials use, such as polymers, glasses, ceramics, demand a versatile professional capable of creating, catching, and adapting technologies, as developing administrative processes which guarantee the insertion of their products in an extremely competitive market. In addition to the scientific and technological aspects, questions related to management, costs, and environmental impact are involved.
The Metallurgical Engineer develops and adapts materials for several industrial uses, such as the confection of slaps and rafters for civil construction, alloys for the automotive industry, tabulation for fluid transportation, nuclear sector, soda cans production, orthopedic implants, materials for the aerospace industry, etc. Present in almost every industrial segment, this professional is really necessary in the basis industry and in the mining-metallurgical sector.
