Pioneer in the country, the Geological Engineering Program has been offered since 1961 by the Federal University of Ouro Preto. The program integrates the areas of Exact and Earth Sciences having basic courses from the areas of Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics Computing, and other peculiar disciplines. Courses with specific characteristics are also offered, such as Stratigraphic Survey Techniques, whose field activities are usually realized in the region of Morro do Chapéu/Bahia, with 15 days of duration, and the laboratorial part in the Geology Department of the School of Mines. The internship of Geological Mapping is realized in partnership with the Federal University of Minas Gerais’ (UFMG) Institute of Geosciences, in Diamantina/MG, with duration of 15 days, under orientation of professors from UFOP and UFMG.
The geologist is able to realize topographic and geodetic works, geological, geochemical, and geophysical surveys, studies related to earth sciences, prospection works, and research to the cubation of deposits and determination of its economic value. Moreover, they can work in the teaching of geological sciences in the high and higher education institutions, also continuing their studies in masters and doctorate degrees. They are also prepared to deal with legal matters related to their specialties, such as expertise and arbitration regarding the functions already mentioned.
