UFOP’s Music Program was created in 1999 after the demand of the Free Music School, which worked in Ouro Preto since 1993 and proposes a wide background. The professional develops skills which allow them to work as a teacher, musician, or researcher. The curriculum is structured with a basis in three strands: General Music Theory, Musical training through instrument/singing, and Didactic-Pedagogical. In the field of General Music Theory, the process of creation is emphasized, which allows a solid and critical musical background. The instrumental training may be in instruments (clarinet, flute, transverse flute, guitar, percussion, piano, saxophone, trumpet, and acoustic guitar) or singing.
The undergraduate in Music may work in musical education as a teacher in schools of general teaching and may also work in specialized schools (conservatories and free schools). Moreover, the student's insertion in the free initiative or cultural projects, organized by public instances or non-governmental organizations.
