The Letters: Language Studies Graduate Program (Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras: Estudos da Linguagem - POSLETRAS) was established owing to the initiative of the UFOP’s Department of Languages and Literature. In 2009, at the 108th Meeting of the Scientific and Technical Council, CAPES approved the creation of the program at the Academic Master's level.
Letters Graduate Program aims to build knowledge in the fields of Linguistics, Literature, and Translation. The studies contribute to the scientific production in many areas, such as Applied Linguistics, Literature, Memory, and Translation Studies. The program is specialized in the study of discursive practices, literary analysis, and arts of the Inconfidentes region. Researchers study the cultural aspects of the region – nearby the city of Ouro Preto – carrying out studies regarding its linguistic history, literary culture, and arts. The campus is located in Mariana, the first capital of the State of Minas Gerais. The city has a rich history, being the main site alongside Ouro Preto of the gold exploration in the eighteenth century and the hometown of the most important Brazilian symbolist poet, Alphonsus de Guimarães.
This program’s lines of research are 1) Language and Cultural Memory; 2) Translation and Discursive Practices; and 3) Applied Linguistics: theory and practices interfaces.
